Rather, it seems quite sane to want to make efforts to address and resolve barriers, or to desire and invest in an improved quality of life. People enter therapy for many reasons at many different times. Some individuals come for very specific reasons, with clear aims while others will enter more with more curiosity than a clear purpose. Among notable times to seek psychotherapy include major life transitions such as a traumatic event, recent diagnosis, divorce/separation, graduation/new student, loss (death of a loved one including a pet, or a break-up), as well as current or historic trauma, abuse (neglect, emotional, physical, sexual), and/or problematic substance use or compulsion.
